Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
