No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
