A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the period preceding former President Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.
A single trader, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.
However the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in positions just before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.
Several of other individuals also made tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
